New York has its fair share of former military installations that are now public parks. Most of the former forts are in various states of abandonment and are only partially open to the public in spite of being part of national park land. Fort Totten is no exception.Of all of the military parks in New York that I have visited so far, Fort Totten seems like it is the most forgotten. While it’s technically an open park, so many of the buildings have been ignored and seemingly left to rot. If you’re willing to trek out to the outskirts of Queens, it’s worth spending a day wandering around the grounds and checking out all the abandoned buildings.
